She was born in Rio Grande City in 1927, lived much of her youth as a migrant farm worker before settling down with her husband in San Antonio to raise five sons. She touched all who knew her with her kindness and gentle heart. She brought dignity, grace and unbounded love to the world and to her family. We will miss her and the light she brought into our lives.

Alicia is preceded in death by her husband, Baldemar Cantu Ramirez and their son, Baldemar Villarreal Ramirez. She is survived by her beloved children, Jose and Olivia Ramirez of Johnson City, TX, Hector and Connie Ramirez, Roberto Ramirez, Ricardo and Lydia Ramirez all of San Antonio, TX; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Consuelo Gonzalez and Judy Thornton Sept. 10, 1944-Oct. 30, 2012 Judy Thorton, of Huntsville, passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2012.

She is survived by her husband, Steve Thornton; Sister, Edith Hatfield; Brother, Sidney Pierce; Children, Derek Thornton (Elenore) and Bridgette Thornton Lamon; Grandchildren, Nate Thorn- Geronima Fonseca Valdez PHARR Geronima Fonseca Valdez, 90, entered her eternal rest on October 31, 2012. She was born on September 30, 1922 in McAllen, Texas to Juan Fonseca and Innocencia Lopez. She is preceded in death by her husband, Roman Valdez; and son, Felix Fonseca. She is survived by her sons, Eddie Balli of Idaho, Miro Valdez and JJ (Chuy) Valdez both of Pharr; daughters, Naty Reyes of Idaho, Inno Elizondo and Mony Cerda both of Pharr, and Josie Rodriguez of San Juan; 35 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 11am to 9pm with a 7pm Chapel Service today November 2, 2012 at De Leon Funeral Home in Pharr.

Cremation will follow Machiko Shimotsu LA FERIA Machiko Shimotsu, beloved wife of Harry Shimotsu, passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, October 28, 2012. Born on the Coast of California, one of six children of Shintaro and Asa Hanawa, "Machi" and her family lived and worked on the farm in Cayucos, San Luis Obispo County, California until relocated during WWII to the interior of California. Since she had started to further her education in the field of nursing at UC Berkley, she later finished her education in nursing in Colorado. After the war, the Hanawa family moved to the Rio Grande Valley of Texas where she met and married Harry Shimotsu and began her life raising and caring for their family. She is survived by her husband Harry and their four children, Gary, Grace, Karen and Ron (Roxanna) Shimotsu and their grandchildren, Geoffrey and Lauren.

She was a devoted wife, homemaker and mother. She was a longtime member of Santa Rosa de Lima Catholic Church in La Rosita. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years Serafin Guerrero, her son Javier Homar Guerrero, her parents, and her brother Fidel (Maria Del Carmen Guerra. Born and raised in Missouri, Ginny moved to the Rio Grande Valley with her husband Joe and son Bill in 1946. She soon became a vital part of the Edinburg community, raising children three and volunteering in civic activities.

She served as president of Edinburg Junior Service League, and she continued her participation in Edinburg Senior Service League until recently. Through the years, Ginny's contributions of time and talent extended into Mission where she was awarded honorary membership in Mission Junior Service League. In 1995, she moved to Mission where she continued her important roles as wife, mother, grandmother, carpooler, girls' sports fan, and "granny roll" maker. Ginny enjoyed life, considered each new day a gift from God, and brought joy to those who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents Raldo and Grace Haden, her husband Joe Davis, and her brother Bill Haden.

Ginny is survived by one daughter Jenny Hudsonpillar (Mike) of Mission, two sons Dr. Joe Davis, Jr. (Pam) of Nacogdoches, and Bill (Brenda) Davis of Lufkin. Jose Vela Jr. WESLACO Our loving father and husband, Jose Vela 84, and lifetime Weslaco resident, passed on October 31, 2012 in his home surrounded by his family. Jose was a World War II veteran who served in Germany and continued his dedication to military service as a member of VFW Post 8563 and Catholic American Legion.

He started his early career at Pepsi-Cola and was a long term employee at the Continental Can Company, from 1962-88, where he was a member of the United Steelworkers of America. He retired in 1988. Dedicated to his church and faith, Jose was an active member of San Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Weslaco where he served as an usher, conducting administrative duties and as a Christmas pageant actor. Joe, as known to his family and friends was a self-taught musician who played the accordion, keyboard and harmonica. He would create lyrics without writing a note and burst into singing.

He loved baseball and was a softball team member of the Gulf Distributing Company. He also enjoyed drawing, watching birds while singing in the swing he built, and viewing Spanish novelas with his loving wife and sister.
