Lex.page Review – Eliminate Writers Block Using This AI Writing Assistant (2024)

Wouldn't it be cool if you had a little sidekick by your side while you wrote? Someone who could help you come up with ideas when you got stuck? Well as of recently, that sidekick exists – and his name is Lex.

The team over at Every created a new AI-powered word processor powered by GPT-4 and it's called Lex. Dubbed the "modern writing platform," Lex allows you to generate essays, articles, and stories to get past writers block with help of AI. It's also free!

The tool can both summarize text & work off of current sentences. Currently trained with data up until mid-2021, Lex contains a huuuge array of knowledge.

Compared to other AI tools like Jasper, I've found Lex to be a lot friendlier for the everyday AI user & nearly seamless to configure and start typing.

If you're looking for the easiest combination of writing and AI tools currently on the market, give lex a Try. They were recently nominated for product of the year on ProductHunt and as of August 2023 raised a $2.75 million seed round led by True Ventures. Their goal is to revolutionizing the modern document workflow.

Lex is basically a word processor that comes equipped with artificial intelligence – meaning its always there to help you write better, faster, and help escape writer's block. It does this by offering up suggestions and ideas based on the context of what you're writing. One of the coolest things about Lex is that it's always learning. As you write with it more, it gets better at understanding your style and the topics you write about. This means that over time, Lex will become more and more personalized to you – which is pretty amazing.

How Does Lex.Page Work?

Lex pretty much acts as a simplified version of Google Docs with integrated AI support. It has a toolbar at the top with all of the basic features you need to write, like bold, italic, and headings. But where Lex really shines is internally – all of the artificial intelligence goodness is happening behind the scenes.

When you're writing in Lex, you can type +++ to basically "ask" it to fill in the blank for you. For example, if I type "The best social media platforms are+++" the AI automatically generates the rest of the sentences with results like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and LinkedIn.

Of course, this is a very basic level of what the AI can do – but it really comes in handy when you're stuck on what to write next or how to finish a sentence.

I'd say at this point you can't use the tool for complete long-form generative content as you can with tools like Jasper or Hyperwrite. But for shorter pieces and continuation, like blog posts or articles, it's a fantastic tool to help you hop over your writers block and write more efficiently.

Personally, I see these AI tools as great ways to help expand your creative ideas and boost your writing process, rather than a replacement for a professional human writer (so don't fire your copywriting team yet).

When you start a conversation in AskLex, you can ask these starting points based on what you have already:

  1. Get feedback on your draft
  2. Get feedback on your article idea
  3. Sharpen your introduction
  4. Identify weak arguments
  5. Overcome writer's block

Unique Features of Lex

There are so many AI-powered editors that have popped up in the last year, so what makes Lex different? Well for starters, I don't think it's trying to offer anything super complex and advanced, rather just help supplement your workflow and reduce your headaches. Here's a few of the features that make the tool unique.

GPT-4 & Recent Updates

You can choose the language model you want associated with your writing. GPT-3, GPT-4, and ChatGPT are the available choices. They've recently added a "creativity" level slider to adjust what level of risk you're looking for. More creativity will give you more detailed & unique sentences, but may not make as much logical sense. Less creativity will keep things rather simple and straightforward. Great for super logical and procedural writing.

Ask Lex

When writing from your laptop, you might find yourself switching tabs and windows constantly. Maybe you're looking up a fact or checking your email. With Lex, there's a feature that allows you to solve your questions without ever having to leave the page – It's called Ask Lex.

For example, let's say you're writing about the history of the internet and you want to know when the first website was created. You can simply type in "When was the first website created?" into the Ask Lex box and Lex will use GPT-4 to give you an answer. This is a really helpful feature that can save you a lot of time (and tab-switching headaches). Quite frankly, it works a lot better than I thought it would.

Human vs Lex Content

Need some assistance in the middle? Lex let's you highlight any part of your document and leave a comment @mentioning it. Ask any question you want. Perfect for brainstorming, re-writing, or writing even more

Lex also has a nifty feature to show you what text it wrote compared to what you wrote. This toggle is called "show AI hidden text" and looks like an eye in the toolbar.

This is great if you write an article over an extended period – after coming back to an article after a few hours you might need a quick refresher on what you wrote before. The AI will highlight where it made changes so you can see how it evolved your writing.

Article Outlines & Automatic Drafts

Lex has a really unique Drafting & Outline features unlike other AI writing softwares. It will generate complete post outlines or drafts tailored to the type of article you're writing (academic, blog posts, news articles, etc). You want it? You'll get it.

I've noticed Lex generates really great outlines to work off of. I haven't seen other tools produce something as complete as this, other tools seem to repeat themselves a lot more. Writers can extend on these points and create full-length articles. I mean 3 details for 5 sections straight off the bat? That's pretty impressive.

The Command Bar

Lex also has a command bar they recently introduced, making it extremely easy to continue typing without disrupting your workflow. By simply pressing command+k (on mac) or control+k (on windows), you bring up the slick menu bar letting you generate more content, change heading size, add bulleted and numerical lists, format texts, and even add code. Lex is quickly becoming the MacBook of AI writing software. Easy to use & work with regardless of technical skill level or ability.

Ask AI for Feedback

You can ask Lex for feedback on your writing, simply type your article and ask it in the command bar. You'll see some comments about the style, syntax, and reasoning of what you've had to say.

Seamless Heading Creation

When you're writing and you want to create heading text (h1-h3), all you have to do is hit enter and then type the # sign. The editor will automatically change the cursor into typing header text. Enter your heading and keep writing!

  • "#" makes a Heading 1
  • "##" makes a Heading 2
  • "###" makes a Heading 3

Comments

Lex also includes a commenting feature to add to your drafts. If you know you need to come back and review a page before finalizing, you can comment suggestions and changes. Similar to Google Docs, document collaborators can give feedback and review content. You can switch between comments using the up and down arrow keys if in larger documents.

Version History

Just like a typical document editor, Lex allows you to save versions of a document which is extremely useful for collaboration or before making major edits.

  • When you start with an outline, save a version before deleting your bullet points (and revert if you don't like what you came up with)
  • When you send a draft for feedback, save a version before any revisions start (and revert if you disagree!)

Writing Statistics

If you want to organize the content you create with Lex, you can move your content into folders. Cleaning up your workflow is crucial if you're going to be writing a lot. In the newest update, Lex introduced streaks, somewhat similar to the GitHub contributions screen. With streaks you can easily see how long you've been writing and updating your content on a daily basis. This could be pretty useful if you're trying to measure your progress as a growing writer.

How Much Does Lex.Page Cost?

Registering for an account is currently free! The only caveat is that you have to get off the waitlist to actually start using the tool. The waitlist hasn't been too long recently – I was able to get an invite within a week or two. As of recently, it looks like there are about 25 thousand people currently on the waitlist, so you might be looking at a bit of longer queue until you can start playing around with Lex.

If you're interested in trying out Lex for yourself, you can sign up for the waitlist here. When signing up, you just have to log in with your Google account and you'll be emailed when a spot has opened up.

Soooo, Who Should Use Lex?

If you're a writer or just someone who likes to dabble in some occasional pieces of writing, then Lex is definitely worth checking out. It could be the slight writing boost you need to elevate your writing to the next level. I would also recommend hopping on the waitlist as soon as you can – they plan to start charging for plans in early 2023 (giving you more time to see if it's right for you). I'm very excited to see how Lex will continue to develop and evolve over the next few months. For now, I think it's a great tool to have in your arsenal – and should only get better from here. The main developer has been pretty active on Twitter and seems to be a really nice guy, so definitely give Nathan or the Lex Twitter a follow to stay up-to-date on the latest Lex news.

What do you think of Lex? Have you tried it out yet? How do you feel it compares to other AI writing tools currently on the market? We currently have a few extra invites of Lex available. If you're interested, let us know in the comments below and we'll send you an invite!
