NEW BERN - David M. Bean, 49, died Sunday, February 5 at Craven Regional Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at a later date. He had worked as a painter and attended Oriental Free Will Baptist Church. He is survived by his mother, Grace Bean of Oriental; two sons, Jamie Bean and Charlie Bean, both of Milford, CT; two brothers, Ed Bean of Surf City, NC and Charles Bean of Darien, CT; and one sister, Grace Bean of Ft. Terry Paul Beacham, Sr.

BAYBORO - Terry Paul Beacham, Sr., 74, of Bayboro died Friday, April 17, 2009, at Craven Regional Medical Center. He is survived by his son, Terry Beacham Jr. of Wilson; daughter, Kathy Carter of Wilson; two brothers, Murray Beacham and Frankie Beacham,both of Virginia Beach, Va.; and three grandchildren. Geraldine Odessa Jarmon Beasley

MARIBEL - Geraldine Odessa Jarmon Beasley, 65, of 364 Lynch’s Beach Loop Road, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2006, at her residence. A native of Pamlico County, she attended the Pamlico County School System and was assistant manager and secretary of Beasley’s Bail Bonding Company. A private graveside service will be held. She is survived by her husband, Wilbert Joe Beasley of the home; two sons, Reginal Beasley and Ronald Beasley of Greenville; two daughters, Grace Matthews of Sayreville, N.J., and LaShonda Grant of Alabama; one brother, Calvin Jarmon of Bayboro; one sister, Hilda Jarmon of Bayboro; and eight grandchildren. Margaret Becker

Margaret Becker, 79, wife of loving husband, Philip Becker, of Arapahoe, North Carolina passed away on April 19th, 2005. Margaret was a graduate of Farmingdale University, New York. Her degree in Horticulture allowed her to do extensive work in greenhouse management. She was an active conservationist, and a lover of nature in all forms. In addition to being an ongoing advocate for other worthy causes like the underprivileged and the protection of the environment, Margaret was active in the Girl Scouts for many years as a leader. She is survived by her husband Philip, son Philip of Bellingham, WA, daughter Kate of Sayville, NY, daughter Jane of Ouogue, NY and daughter Margaret of Nashville, TN. She also leaves behind two loving grandchildren, Whitney and Colleen. We celebrate her and her extraordinary spirit. (The Pamlico News [Oriental, NC] - April 2005)

On Friday, June 1, 1979, John Quintus Beckwith, of Oriental, N.C., beloved husband of Margaret Dudley Cantwell Beckwith; father of Rev. John Quintus Beckwith III, of Darlington, S.C., Mrs. George R. Feldman, Fayetteville, N.C., Miss Ann Dunbar of Clinton, S.C.; brother of Rev. James. O. Beckwith, Raleigh, N.C.; sister of Miss Evelina Gilbert Beckwith, Lumberton, N.C. Also survived by five grandchildren. Services will be held at the Virginia Theological Chapel, north of Alexandria, Va., on Monday, June 4, at 2 p.m. Interment Virginia Theological Seminary, Alexandria, Va. Brenda Dugger Bell

Mrs. Brenda Dugger Bell, 48, a resident of 8865 N.C. Highway 99 North, the Pike Road community of Pantego, died Sunday August 5, 2007 at her home. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday August 7, 2007 at Union Grove Church of Christ officiated by Scott Askew. Burial will follow in the Davis Cemetery. Edwin “Booger” Harris, Kevin O’Dell, Vernon Bell, Jay Bell, Curtis Campbell and Junior Hart will serve as pallbearers. Bryan Lee, Brandon Lee, Jeffery Allen, Mark Allen, Joseph Dugger and Christian Dugger will serve as honorary pallbearers. Mrs. Bell was born in Elizabethton, TN on April 26, 1959, daughter of the late William T. Dugger and Shirley Wagner Dugger, who survives. She was a 1977 graduate of Plymouth High School and married Jurden Braxton “J.B.” Bell, Jr., who survives, on August 5, 1997. Mrs. Bell was a homemaker who helped in day-to-day operations on the family farm and was a member of Union Grove Church of Christ. She loved going offshore fishing with her husband. Mrs. Bell is survived by her husband, J.B., of the home; her mother, Shirley W. Dugger of Mountain City, TN; two daughters: Teresa Bell O’Dell of Fuquay-Varina and Sheila Bell of Pantego; two stepsons: Jay Bell, III and his wife Pammy and Vernon Bell and his wife Jennifer, all of Pantego; a sister, Sharon Lee of Durham; three brothers: Michael Dugger of Boone, Johnny Dugger of Mountain City, TN and Jimmy Dugger of Pantego; a maternal grandmother: Ruby Wagner of Butler, TN; three grandchildren: Tyler O’Dell, Kyle O’Dell and Kassidy O’Dell; four stepgrandchildren: Eric Bell, Casey Bell, Jessica Hubers and Jenna Williams and one great-grandchild. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday August 6, 2007 at Paul Funeral Home of Belhaven and at other times at the home. Paul Funeral Home of Belhaven is serving the Bell family. Nancy C. Bengtson, 76, of Oriental, died Thursday, May 21, 2009, at home. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her husband, Roy Bengtson; one son, Steven Bengtson of Coral Gables, Fla.; two daughters, Cyndy Winslow of Wykoff, Minn., and Debra Buente of Evansville, Ind.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Essie Lenore Benjamin

YORK - Essie Lenore Benjamin, 82, departed this world Wednesday, August 2, 2006. She was the wife of David Benjamin. She was born in Bayboro, N.C., in the year of our Lord, December 21, 1923. She was the daughter of the late Samuel and Senia Lewis. At the age of three she was brought to New York along with her sisters and brothers, The family resided in the Bronx where she was raised and acquired most of her education, which included her graduation from Senior College. As a young woman, she met and later married David. Out of this union, four children were born, Ronald, David, Dianne, and Charles Benjamin. Always one to be involved in the God's work, she attended several churches and joined them in order to make sure her children came up in life knowing God's word. She became the secretary of the Church of the Peacemaker under the auspices of Pastor Augustus Smith, PhD, from whom she learned a lot, including studying for the ministry. After moving to York in 1973, she became an active member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. She leaves behind one son, Charles Benjamin; 25 beautiful grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, and friends who loved her dearly and will surely miss her. Viewings will be held Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Boulding Mortuary, Inc., 50 W. Boundary Ave., York, and Saturday from 9 to 9:30 a.m. at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 367 Simpson St., York. The service will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church with Thaddeus Godwin, pastor Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Madoline Lupton Bennett, 83, of 18985 N.C. Highway 55, Merritt, died Sunday, April 13, 2008, at home. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 16, at Bryant Funeral Home with the Rev. Blaney Rowe officiating. She is survived by one son, Edward Earl "Bud" Bennett of Washington, N.C.; three daughters, Lena Rice and Elsie Flowers, both of Lowland, and Janet Foster of Belhaven; two sisters, Mildred Carawan and Marlene Baker, both of Lowland; 18 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. Thelma Willis Bennett

Thelma Willis Bennett, 81, died Tuesday morning at her home. She was born on October 2, 1917, the daughter of Herbert and Mamie Willis. She graduated with a nursing degree in 1938 and worked at Craven Co. Hospital until her retirement in 1980. She quietly cared for the sick and terminally ill and was known to be there just to listen. Probably better known as the Fossil Lady of Pamlico County, she was an active member of the Fossil Club of North Carolina. She shared her love and knowledge of fossils with school children, senior citizens and civic organizations. She co-authored the book, "The Cross Roads," which deals with the history of Arapahoe. She wrote an unpublished family history for her three sons. She was a member of Bethany Christian Church in Arapahoe, where she served as an elder and taught Sunday School. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Bethany Christian Church, with Rev. Merritt Watson officiating. Burial will follow in the Banks Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Bryant Funeral Home Wednesday from 7-8 p.m., and other times at the home of her son, Timothy Bennett, 3811 Mitchell Circle, New Bern. She is survived by her three sons, Benjamin F. Bennett III and his wife, Joyce, of Austin, Texas, Richard Willis Bennett of Raleigh, and Timothy Bennett and his wife, Robin of New Bern; three brothers, Herbert Willis of Arapahoe, Robert Willis of Jacksonville and Hewitt Willis of Ft. Meyers, FL; two sisters, Dorothy Harrison of Arapahoe and Verta Many of New Bern; three grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethany Christian Church in Arapahoe. Dr. Truett Vann Bennett

Dr. Truett Vann Bennett, beloved father, husband, grandfather, step-grandfather, church elder, music director, physician, a kind and gentle soul, passed into the next life August 19, 2005 at 5:25 pm at Craven Regional Medical Center. He was born March 19, 1922 in Cramerton in Gaston County, North Carolina. The youngest of the five sons of Reverend Preston and Florence Parker Bennett, he was raised in Asheville, North Carolina. He was an accomplished musician with a lifelong passion for the oboe. In 1934 at the age of 15 he played in the first North Carolina Symphony. He also performed with many groups including the Honolulu Civic Orchestra (national doctor's orchestra), Craven Community Band, Pamlico County Band and an instrumental trio with Chris Mele and Lou Marini of Oriental. Truett left Asheville at the age of 14 to live with his brother, David, in Chapel Hill. He graduated from Chapel Hill High School where he played oboe in the band his brother directed. He completed pre-medical education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was captain of the track team and led the SEC as a pole vaulter. He received his MD degree from Washington University in 1945 at the age of 23. He completed specialty training as an ear, nose and throat surgeon at the University of Virginia. He was certified by both the Board of Otolaryngology and the American Academy of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery and was elected to the American Triological Society. He has, until recently, been a member of the American Medical Association and the North Carolina Medical Association. He proudly served in the Army from 1946-1948, completing Flight Surgeon's and Parachute School. He was also Captain in the Air Rescue Service. He practiced as an ear, nose and throat surgeon in Atlanta, Georgia from 1953-1962 and in Honolulu and Kona, Hawaii from 1962-1990. Rather than enjoying a well earned retirement, he retrained in family medicine and established a general medical practice in Oriental, NC from 1990-1998. Dr. Bennett was a devout Christian who lived according to his principles and generously contributed his many talents to the community. He made 12 trips overseas as a volunteer physician. The first four trips were to Viet Nam where he performed surgery under combat conditions. He subsequently went to Taiwan, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Egypt and Belize. He also volunteered at Merci Clinic in New Bern and HOPE Clinic in Bayboro. He is an Elder in the Pamlico Presbyterian Church. He founded the church music program, organized a bell choir and has served as music director since 1990. He also has performed on the oboe and piano at numerous services. A man who lived out his Christian values, Dr. Bennett will be missed by both family and friends. He has been a valued community member, truly dedicated to helping others. He was preceded in death by his brothers, David, Ed, Carlyle and Charles, and Patricia Henritzy, his first wife. He is survived by their sons, Dr. G. Vann Bennett and wife Dr. Bernadette Pelissier of Hillsborough, James E. Bennett and wife Eva Bennett of St. Mary's Alaska; five grandchildren, Patricia, Lisa, Davis, Patrick and Vann; and his loving wife, Dr. Fran Deaton Bennett. Truett was much beloved by the Deaton family of six children, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A memorial service was held at Pamlico Presbyterian Church, 1630 Kershaw Road in Oriental on Sunday, August 21 at 3 pm. Arrangements by Bryant Funeral Home & Cremations, Alliance, NC. James Douglas Benton

REELSBORO - James Douglas Benton, 56, died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, at Craven Regional Medical Center. He was a long-distance truck driver and was a member of Reelsboro United Methodist Church. He enjoyed bluegrass music and was a member of the Bluegrass Association. Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Bryant Funeral Home Chapel, Alliance, with the Rev. Mike Roach officiating. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth N. Benton; two daughters, Debra Morton and Leslie Broughton of Reelsboro; two brothers, Maurice Wayne Benton of Stonewall and Charles William Benton of New Bern; and four grandchildren. Henry R. Bess

Henry R. Bess of the 2700 block of Hollister Ave., a retired crane operator, died May 12, 1993, in his home. Mr. Bess was born in Bayboro, N.C. He was retired from the Navy Public Works Center after 40 years of service and was a member of New Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Bess; two daughters, Tammy Holloway and Deborah Branch, both of Norfolk; three stepdaughters, Gail Walker of Miami, Joy Montague of Petersburg and Michelle Gray of Norfolk; one stepson, Eric Montague of Miami; one sister, Hettie Lockett of Norfolk; four brothers, Ernest and William Bess, both of Norfolk, Howard Bess of Oakland, Calif., and George Bess of Baltimore; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m Monday in New Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk, by the Rev. G.G. Campbell Jr. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Naomi Wanda Bess

GRANTSBORO - Naomi Wanda Bess, 69, of Grantsboro died Friday, Oct. 19, 2007, at her residence. She had worked as a waitress and was a member of Bridgeton Pentecostal Holiness Church. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Bryant Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Dixon officiating. Burial will be in Grantsboro Cemetery. William Oliver Bess

William Oliver Bess departed this life March 13, 2004, at Bayside Hospital. He was born in Bayboro, N.C. to the late Annie and Charles Bess. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and attended Norfolk State. Later he served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion Post 5 and The Up Town Boys. Also, a member of New Calvary Baptist Church. He also was a U.S. Postal Carrier. Survivors include a sister, Hettie B. Lockett of Norfolk; three brothers, Howard Bess of Houston, Texas, George Bess of Baltimore, Md. and Earnest Bess of Norfolk; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The funeral will be held at New Calvary Baptist Church Friday at 11 a.m. by Dr. Gilbert G. Campbell Jr. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. ORIENTAL - Ramonia M. Blackmon, 57, of 1435 Broad St. Ext., died Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, at her residence. She was a member of Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Church. She also participated in Yokefellow at the Pamlico Correctional Institute. Funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the New Bern Eastern Missionary Baptist Association Headquarters Building, N.C. 306 North, Grantsboro, with the Rev. Eugene Mason officiating. Burial will follow at Perkins Cemetery in Oriental. She is survived by her mother, Edna Jones of Oriental; her husband, Jesse Blackmon of Port Charlotte, Fla.; daughter, Rebecca Blackmon of New Bern; son, Sidney Blackmon of Meriden, Conn.; three sisters, Carnell Barrow of Oriental, Velman Lyons of New Haven, Conn., and Gloria Sampson of New Haven, Conn.; three brothers, Howard Jones of Oriental, Darnell Jones of Alliance and Clarence Jones Jr. of Huntsville, Ala. Alice Long Blalock, 80, of Oriental died March 9, 2009, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law. She was a native of Person County and for many years owned and operated Blalock's Department Store in Roxboro. She is survived by her son, Bill Blalock of Aiken, S.C.; three daughters, June S. Blayney of Oriental, Suzanne G. Blalock of Roxboro and Bonnie B. Thompson of York, S.C.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. No funeral services have been planned. Morgan Chase Bank. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at Small Chapel Christian Church with the Rev. Roderick Kornegay officiating. Burial will be in the Crawford Cemetery. She is survived by her daughter, Questella Nelson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and four grandchildren. Tyndall of Charlotte; one sister, Jimmie Rae Wood of Albany, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bryant Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Jim Marshburn officiating. Burial will follow in Paul Cemetery in Arapahoe.
